Google I/O is just days away, and this year, Google surprised users by releasing the Android 17 beta a week early. Pixel owners can now test the latest version of the operating system, which promises a range of new features and improvements. The beta is primarily for developers, but enthusiasts are also diving in to see what's new. If you own a Pixel 6 or newer, including the Pixel 10 series, you can enroll in the Android Beta Program to receive the update over the air. The full release is expected later this year, with Samsung Galaxy devices set to get One UI 9 based on Android 17 soon after.
Gemini Intelligence and More AI Features
Artificial intelligence continues to be a major focus, and Android 17 brings Gemini Intelligence under a single umbrella. This suite includes features that allow AI to perform automated tasks like ordering an Uber or booking appointments. Gemini is also integrated into Chrome for web page summarization and autofill for passwords. Two new AI functions debut: Rambler, which removes filler words from voice dictation, and Create My Widget, where you describe a widget and Gemini builds it. While the widget options are currently limited to countdown clocks, weather, time, stock info, and recipes, it's an innovative step toward personalized interfaces.
Emoji Overhaul
Google has redesigned its nearly 4,000 emojis with a new 3D aesthetic called Noto 3D. The goal is to make emojis feel more alive and impactful. Initially, these emojis will be exclusive to Pixel devices, appearing in Gboard, YouTube, and Gmail. Other Android phones will receive them later, but no timeline has been announced. The redesign pays homage to the old blob emojis, which were retired in 2017, but the new look is distinctly modern and adds depth to digital communication.
Pause Point
To combat doomscrolling, Android 17 introduces Pause Point, a Digital Wellbeing feature that acts as a gentle nudge before you open distracting apps. When activated, it prompts a 10-second breathing exercise and suggests alternative activities. If you still want to proceed, you can wait out the timer. Pause Point also includes an integrated app timer and is designed to be somewhat difficult to disable, requiring a settings dive and a full reboot. This approach aims to reduce mindless app usage without resorting to harsh lockouts.
Screen Reactions and Instagram Support
Content creators will appreciate Screen Reactions, a built-in mode that records your selfie camera alongside your screen, making reaction videos seamless. This feature is coming to Pixel devices later this year. Additionally, Android 17 improves native Instagram support with Ultra HDR capture, video stabilization, and night sight integration. The Instagram Edits app gains AI-powered smart enhance for upscaling and sound separation to clean up audio tracks. These tools are aimed at creators but are accessible to all users.
Wider AirDrop Support
Google's Quick Share is expanding compatibility with Apple's AirDrop. After rolling out to Pixel 10 and Pixel 9 devices, Android 17 extends support to phones from Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor. Google states this is rolling out to 'all Android phones' by mid-2026. For devices without native AirDrop support, Quick Share can generate a QR code for file transfer. Quick Share will also integrate with more apps, including WhatsApp, which previously lacked the feature.
Easier Platform Switching
Collaboration with Apple results in a new transfer tool baked into Android 17. Similar to iOS 26.3's Transfer to Android feature, Android 17 allows users to move their data—including photos, contacts, apps, and eSIM—to an iPhone with a simple side-by-side setup. The feature supports home screen layout transfer. Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices will get this first, with broader availability to follow.
Bank Spoofing Protection
To combat scam calls that spoof legitimate bank numbers, Android 17's Scam Protection now automatically severs calls that don't match verified bank numbers from your installed banking apps. The phone will end the call before it even rings. This feature initially works with international banks and will expand. It will be backward compatible to Android 11, ensuring widespread protection. Samsung Galaxy S26 devices tested this in early 2026, and it's now part of the core Android 17 rollout.
Full Android Auto Overhaul
Android Auto receives a major update with Android 17. The interface scales to any screen size, including circular and irregular shapes, with Material 3 Expressive theming and widget support. Video playback is now natively supported, catering to EV drivers during charging stops. Gemini Intelligence enables voice-driven automation of car tasks. Google Maps gets Immersive Navigation, a 3D view, and Ask Maps for complex AI-driven queries, competing with Apple CarPlay Ultra.
Additional Security Updates
Security enhancements include improved Live Threat Detection, which uses on-device AI to monitor app behavior such as SMS forwarding or unauthorized accessibility use. Chrome will analyze APK downloads against malware databases before allowing download if Safe Browsing is on. Lost devices in Find My now require both PIN and biometrics to mark as found. A new temporary precise location permission lets apps access location once without repeated permissions. Networking security and Android Compute Core improvements round out the update, ensuring robust protection under the hood.
